[2:13]  1 tn Heb “the habit of the priests with the people [was this].”

[2:13]  2 sn The Hebrew word occurs only twice in the OT, here and again in v. 14. Its exact meaning is not entirely clear, although from the context it appears to be a sacrificial tool used for retrieving things from boiling water.

[3:6]  3 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Eli) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[4:4]  4 tn Or “people.”

[5:11]  5 tn Heb “and they sent and gathered.”

[5:11]  6 tn Heb “me.”

[5:11]  7 tn Heb “my.”

[5:11]  8 tn Or “panic.”

[5:11]  9 tn Heb “the hand of God was very heavy there.”

[9:20]  10 tn Heb “do not fix your heart.”

[9:20]  11 tn Heb “and all the house of your father.”

[17:40]  12 tn This Hebrew word occurs only here and its exact meaning is not entirely clear. It refers to a receptacle of some sort and apparently was a common part of a shepherd’s equipment. Here it serves as a depository for the stones that David will use in his sling.

[20:21]  13 tn Heb “from you and here.”

[20:42]  14 sn Beginning with 20:42b, the verse numbers through 21:15 in the English Bible differ from the verse numbers in the Hebrew text (BHS), with 20:42b ET = 21:1 HT, 21:1 ET = 21:2 HT, 21:2 ET = 21:3 HT, etc., through 21:15 ET = 21:16 HT. With 22:1 the verse numbers in the ET and HT are again the same.

[20:42]  15 tn Heb “he”; the referent (David) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
